I’m planning to include some reviews of various gambling machines here soon, so I thought I’d start with a look at some of the slot machine manufacturers and their products. There was a time, not long ago, when such a list would be short. But with the advent of internet casinos, the list of slot machine companies grows longer every day.

Of course, depending on where you live, you might be searching for such information using a phrase like “fruit machine suppliers” or “gaming companies.” Such a list should (and does) include old slot machine brands like IGT (International Game Technologies) and internet casino software vendors like Microgaming and Playtech.

As I create more posts about related subjects, I’ll update this page with links to manufacturer-specific lists of games and reviews of their overall offerings.

Most big ecommerce companies are from Western Europe. The biggest ecommerce companies in Europe are from Western countries. Western Europe really dominates the European ecommerce industry, as it accounted for approximately 68 percent of total European online retail turnover in 2017. I know that a lot of sites in this space try to offer as complete a resource as possible, but please remember that I’m just one guy with a blog. I don’t have an army of freelance writers working for me, and even if I did, there are so many slot machine games from so many different providers that it would be almost impossible to keep up with them all.

This company has built its fortune in the online gaming market. It started business as a developer of an online auction site as a subsidiary of Japanese cell phone company Softbank. In 2000, the company switched to online gaming services, hosting servers in Japan for a MMOG.

1. Ainsworth Game Technology

Ainsworth Game Technology is one of the oldest companies on my list of slot machine manufacturers. They’ve been in business for 20+ years. Ainsworth is an Australian company, and if you know anything about gambling in Australia, you know how popular slots are there. They call them “pokies,” though, which is an abbreviation for “poker machines.”

And some of Ainsworth’s most recent game additions include:

2. Amatic Industries

Amatic Industries has been in business for over a quarter of a century now. Besides slot machines, they make video lottery terminals and video roulette games. They have a huge selection of slot machine brands in their stable, too, including some of the following:

• GrandX (A “Wheel of Fortune” lookalike.)

3. Amaya Gaming

Amaya Gaming is defunct now. It’s part of The Stars Group, the company which owns PokerStars. I include it here under its original name because I think some online users still look for games from Amaya Gaming. They offer lots of cute games, including:

4. Aristocrat Gaming Technology

Aristocrat Gaming Technology is another Australian “poker machine” vendor. They’e recently gotten their hands on some major intellectual property, too, and they offer games like:

5. Ash Gaming

Ash Gaming used to be a big deal, now they’re a part of Playtech. As part of that group, they have extensive licensed properties to create games about. Their most famous, though, is probably Who Wants to Be a Millionaire.

6. Bally Technologies

Bally Technologies is now a subsidiary of SG Gaming (Scientific Games). The company has been around forever. Not only do they make slot machines, but they used to be one of the biggest pinball machine companies in the world, too. Some of their most well-known brands include:

7. Barcrest Gaming

Barcrest Gaming–like Bally Technologies– is also now a subsidiary of SG Gaming (Scientific Games). If you’re a real slot machine aficionado, you might recognize the names of some of their games:

8. Betsoft Gaming

Betsoft Gaming specializes in online gambling games, especially mobile friendly slots and 3D games. Here are some of their titles:

Fremantle Media is one of the more unusual listings on this page, because they don’t exactly design or manufacture slot machine games. NetEnt is another publicly-traded company that specializes in online games. They’re responsible for, among other things, the Jumanji slot machine game.

NewGin Co. Ltd. is another Japanese manufacturer of pachinko and pachislo machines.

23. NextGen Gaming

NextGen Gaming serves both online and land-based casinos. They offer some really cool titles, including:

24. Novomatic Gaming

The name “Novomatic” always reminds me of the Steve Goodman song, Vegematic.

But that song has nothing to do with the company, though. Novomatic Gaming is probably the biggest European slot machine maker there is, in fact.

25. Ortiz Gaming

Ortiz Gaming specializes in Class II and Class III slot machines, especially when it comes to bingo technology. And their games are OVERTLY bingo-based, too:

26. Playtech

Playtech is another online game designer and creator, and, like Microgaming, they’re publicly traded. They also don’t allow their licensees to accept real money players from the United States. Some of their better known games include:

27. Realtime Gaming

Realtime Gaming (RTG) is probably the biggest online casino game vendor that still serves U.S. audiences — at least the audiences that don’t live in states with legal, regulated online casinos. (There are 47 states like that.) As a result, you’ve probably never heard of most of their games unless you’re a devoted internet gambler.

My favorite of their games is It’s Good to Be Bad, but I’m old school.

28. SG Gaming (Scientific Games)

Scientific Games is headquartered in Las Vegas. They own Bally now, and they own Shuffle Master. And they also own WMS Gaming. Their most well-known game is probably Monopoly slot machines.

29. Universal Entertainment Corporation

Universal Entertainment Corporation is another pachinko and pachislo manufacturer.

30. VGT (Video Gaming Technologies) – One of My Favorite Slot Machine Manufacturers

VGT is one of the biggest names in the Oklahoma gambling market, and they specialize in bingo-based slot machine games.

The Final Word about Slot Machine Manufacturers

The brand names in the slot machine manufacturers category are many, but, of course, IGT (International Game Technology) towers above the rest like Walmart towers over other retail establishments. The list above gets longer when you account for the companies making online slot machine games, too.

The video gaming industry is one of the most competitive businesses in the world. Heavy-hitters like Sony and Microsoft are backed by decades of profit making in other electronics and computers. Other companies are on the list on the strength of strong sales for historically popular games. The newer players – mostly companies outside the US – are players in the mobile gaming divisions.

The entire industry made over $40 billion in revenue in 2018 according to Forbes Online. The top five game companies made most of that profit. The smaller companies struggle, and even some top publishers are laying off employees. There may be some changes in the bottom five on this list year to year, but the top five are probably there to stay.

10. Gung Ho Online

This company has built its fortune in the online gaming market. It started business as a developer of an online auction site as a subsidiary of Japanese cell phone company Softbank. In 2000, the company switched to online gaming services, hosting servers in Japan for a MMOG. In 2013, it released an in-house developed mobile game, Puzzles & Dragons, which accounts for the majority of its revenue. It has also acquired other game publishers since it purchased back shares from Softbank.

9. Ubisoft

Ubi Soft was originally a family-owned, mail order hardware and software business run from the suburbs of Paris. It was a family business whose members soon recognized the growing interest in PC games. Ubi Soft developed some titles in-house that were successful in Europe but did not translate well overseas. Eventually, the company purchased rights to distribute other titles, which enabled them to buy Red Storm Games, the maker of a popular game based on the Tom Clancy novels.

Aside from the Assassin’s Creed series, Ubisoft is known for the Far Cry series and Just Dance.

8. King

King initially developed games that users could play within their web browser, eliminating the need to download and/or install software. That model didn’t prove successful initially. However, the company found success producing games for use on social media platforms like Facebook.

Within social media gaming, King would make money via so-called “micro-transactions” and through in-game advertising. This caused revenue growth of over $1 billion within two years.

7. Namco Bandai

Namco was already a well-known arcade game company. Bandai, a toy maker and TV show producer, has some of the world’s best-known brands, like Power Rangers. In 2005, the gaming divisions of the two companies merged.

The merged Namco Bandai Studios has some of the longest running and most popular console fighting games, such as Tekken and Soul Caliber. It also has released a number of games based on Bandai-owned IP like Dragonball and Gundam.

6. Electronic Arts

Electronic Arts may be one of the most widely recognized brands in gaming culture. Former Apple employee Trip Hawkins started the company with financing and began producing a variety of games for the growing home computer market. It was a few years after the company began that EA began working on a pro football simulator that would spawn one of its more popular games, Madden NFL.

EA’s sports games are what made the company a success. However, EA acquired a number of studios over time, producing or co-producing popular games from other subgenres.

Former UCLA basketball star Ed O’Bannon sued EA for using his likeness without permission. EA settled with O’Bannon, but stopped making college sports games because of the suit.

5. Activision Blizzard

Activision and Blizzard were separately to of the most successful game publishers and developers of the 1990s, with Activision being one of the oldest companies in the business. During a downturn in the home gaming industry, Activision was purchased by a tech CEO and regained market share.

Blizzard was a pioneer in the online, multiplayer strategy games like Warcraft. The French company Vivendi purchased Blizzard, and Activision later acquired Vivendi’s gaming division, which included Blizzard.

4. Nintendo Company

Nintendo was in the gaming business long before computers were invented, making playing cards, and later on, toys and arcade games. It entered the console game industry in the 1970s when it distributed the Odyssey console in Japan. In 1981, it developed and released Donkey Kong, the game that spawned the signature character Mario.

Nintendo is perhaps better known for the consoles and gaming devices it has created rather than its games. The company produced a console in 1977 before launching the Famicom, NES and Game Boy systems later.

3. Microsoft (Xbox Games)

Bill Gates’ company had always had an in-house game division that produced and published games with the MS-DOS operating system and for Windows. The company created a separate division for games in 2000 when it entered the console gaming arena and announced the Xbox.

Xbox Games develops and publishes games for the PC and for the console as well as publishing mobile and web browser games. It has also acquired Mojang, the developer and publisher of Minecraft.

The Microsoft game Minesweeper has been included with every version of Windows (in some form) since 1992.

2. Tencent Games

Tencent Games is a division of Tencent Holdings, a Chinese holding company with a variety of business interests, including online gaming. From the beginning, the gaming company focused on online and social media gaming to meet the interests of the growing Chinese mobile communications market. Its parent company has invested in a variety of game publishers and hosts.

Today the company continues to focus on online and mobile gaming and has its own streaming platform. It’s the largest valued game company.

1. Sony Computer Entertainment (SCE)

A division of electronics and entertainment conglomerate Sony, SCE began in 1993 when Sony announced the production of the Playstation game console. Since then, SCE has become the largest video game company in the world based on annual revenue.

SCE oversees the production of the hardware and peripherals for Playstation games. It is also the parent company of Sony Interactive Entertainment Worldwide (SIE), the company that oversees the production of Sony games. Many of the studios under SIE were acquired by takeover.

Did You Know?

Sony’s revenue comes from its hardware, as it only placed two games (Marvel’s Spider Man and God of War) in the top ten list in 2018.
