Bessemer is a city in the U.S. state of Michigan. As of the 2010 census, the city population was 1,914. It is the county seat of Gogebic County.
The city is situated within Bessemer Township, but is politically independent. It is on US 2 with Ironwood several miles to the west and Wakefield several miles to the east. The Big Powderhorn, Blackjack and Indianhead ski areas are located within a few miles of Bessemer. Cross-country skiing and snowmobiling are also very popular in this area known as Big Snow country because of heavy snowfall influenced by nearby Lake Superior.
Bessemer was incorperated in 1884 as the mining of ore and copper started growing througout the Gogebic Range. The town was erected county seat in 1887 and the courthouse was built. The town then grew to a boomtown of stores, motels, gas stations, and resturaunts. The town slowly started falling apart after the closing of the mines. The town is nowpeaceful with a few gas stations and some other businesses.

Indianhead is now owned by the same investor who bought Blackjack. The management team operates both Blackjack and Indianhead and sell interchangeable lift tickets so you can ski at both areas on the same day, they run a shuttle bus between the areas that are only a couple miles apart. The Big Powderhorn, Blackjack and Indianhead ski areas are located within a few miles of Bessemer.
